New Zealand show strength in opening success

Haidee Tiffen set the pace of New Zealand’s 205 with a watchful half-century in the battle of the big guns

Australia’s World Cup defence got off to a poor start as their batsmen failed to deal with the pressure of a moderate chase against a committed New Zealand. In a tussle between the Group B heavyweights, New Zealand quickly overcame a horrible collapse of 7 for 34, which ended their innings at 205, by hitting the hosts regularly in their interrupted chase.New Zealand were ahead by 13 on the Duckworth-Lewis method when the rain hit, leaving Australia at 6 for 132 after 33 overs. Kate Pulford’s six-over spell of 3 for 30 shocked Australia as they fell to 4 for 71 after a bright opening created by 21 from the captain Karen Rolton and Shelley Nitschke’s 27. However, the home team paid for sloppy shot selection and failed to take advantage of a handful of dropped chances.Rolton hit a six to long-on off Pulford, who followed up with a short ball which hit the batsman, and in her next over she forced Rolton into miscuing an ugly pull. Lisa Sthalekar was dropped second ball by Sarah Tsukigawa, but it wasn’t costly as Rachel Priest dived to her right for an outstanding one-handed take when the vice-captain was 6.Nitschke pulled Pulford for six to fine leg the ball before being lbw, and the score could have been worse if Priest hadn’t missed Jodie Fields on 0. Fields tried to be the glue for the rest of the innings, although she had to watch Jess Cameron (15) and Lauren Ebsary (1) depart to wild slogs. Those wickets lifted the total required under Duckworth-Lewis and Australia were unable to get ahead following the first break for rain. The second one came shortly after and eventually ended the game. Fields, who missed an offcutter that lifted a bail before it re-lodged in its home, was unbeaten on 26 at the finish while Ellyse Perry was 17.”It’s disappointing to lose this way because I thought Jodie Fields and Ellyse Perry were going well when the rain came,” Rolton said. “I thought the New Zealanders bowled really well. They put the pressure on us and we made the mistakes.”We’ll continue to be positive for the rest of the tournament and try to win our remaining group matches. There’s still a long way to go in the tournament and a lot of games to play, so anything can still happen.”Haidee Tiffen, New Zealand’s captain, set the pace in their innings with a watchful 57 from 113 balls. However, Tiffen, who exited after a highly-valuable partnership of 62 with Sara McGlashan, started the collapse in the 41st over when she charged at Erin Osborne and found Cameron at deep midwicket. They quickly tumbled from 3 for 171 to all-out after 48 overs.Aimee Mason (0) followed Tiffen and Nicola Browne (3) missed a sweep to be bowled by Osborne. Further momentum was lost when McGlashan edged behind on 29 and Emma Sampson caught Tsukigawa off her own bowling.Australia also missed a series of tough chances, including one by Cameron off the first ball of the game. Another difficult drop left Perry with a dislocated right little finger, but she returned to bowl at the death. She picked up McGlashan, Priest and Sophie Devine (13 off seven balls) in her haul of 3 for 40 from six overs.Early in the game the fielding was excellent and Sthalekar’s direct hit resulted in Pulford’s departure for 3 in the fourth over. Suzie Bates entered in a bright mood and was 29 off 24 when Rene Farrell got one of her sharp inswingers to hit the stumps.New Zealand were 2 for 42 and were taken forward by Tiffen and Amy Satterthwaite (38), who put on 67 to give the team a boost. Some light showers made things tougher for both sides, but Australia’s spinners battled through and Sthalekar returned 2 for 35 while Osborne earned 2 for 37.Two easier matches remain for the Australians before the Super Six stage, with them facing South Africa in Newcastle on Tuesday. New Zealand take on West Indies at Bankstown Oval in Sydney on the same day.

Leeds star Bamford could make England debut

Leeds United star Patrick Bamford could reportedly make his England debut on Sunday afternoon, a hugely exciting moment for the once journeyman striker.

The Lowdown: Bamford transformation complete

The 27-year-old has emerged as one of the Whites’ key men in the Marcelo Bielsa era, scoring 17 goals and registering seven assists in the Premier League last season and coming a long way from an endless spell of loans at Chelsea.

Bamford’s incredible rise has been rewarded with an England call-up, but he didn’t feature in the Three Lions’ 4-0 win away to Hungary on Thursday night.

The Latest: Striker set for debut

According to The Daily Mail, the Leeds man will likely feature in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier at home to Andorra.

Gareth Southgate could potentially ring the changes, allowing Bamford to win the first of what is hopefully many caps for his country.

The Verdict: Richly deserved

Bamford was unfortunate to miss out on a place in England’s Euro 2020 squad, but his call-up was fully deserved after such an impressive 12 months or so, during which time he has been described as ‘exceptional’ by Jurgen Klopp.

The striker hasn’t always been the most popular player – some Leeds fans used to be critical of him – but he has silenced the doubters and will be desperate to shine against Andorra.

Whites supporters everywhere will no doubt be willing him on, as he looks to strengthen his hopes of playing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

In other news, Leeds have been tipped to sign a player in January – find out who it is here.

Expert feels Leeds have better one-on-one attackers than Cornet

Leeds United have superior one-on-one attackers to Maxwel Cornet, says Ligue 1 expert Adam White.

Cornet was heavily linked with a move to Leeds before his transfer to Burnley, with The Sun reporting earlier this summer that the Yorkshire club were keen on the former Lyon man.

Cornet is capable of playing both as a left-back and left winger, but White believes his best position is probably somewhere in between.

However, when it comes to attacking from that left wing-back position, the Get French Football News writer is not too convinced about the 24-year-old’s ability, suggesting Leeds have players who can do a much better job.

“At Leeds, he could’ve played somewhere in between,” White told FFC. “But I would expect someone [else] to be better one-on-one. Beating a defender isn’t necessarily Cornet’s style.”

All things considered, Leeds will not be losing any sleep over not signing Cornet during the summer transfer window.

They have still been able to strengthen the positions on the flank, bringing in Junior Firpo from Barcelona to fill that left-back role and Dan James from Manchester United to add more quality to the attack.

You would think that Marcelo Bielsa would be happy with that, especially with James being a long-term target.

First-innings points take Jamaica to title

A round-up of the second day of the 12th round matches of the Regional Four Day Competition

Cricinfo staff29-Mar-2009Jamaica won the four-day championship by assuring first-innings points against the Windward Islands at the Trelawny Stadium. Table-toppers Jamaica dismissed the visitors for 222, seven runs short of their target of 229 to move to an unassailable 96 points with two rounds of the competition remaining. Deon Smith hit a handsome half-century for Windwards but medium pacer David Bernard grabbed 4 for 31 and legspinner Odean Brown captured 3 for 49, to ensure the honours belonged to Jamaica. Continuing from the overnight 223 from 9, Jamaica lost Carlton Baugh quickly, after he added just six to his overnight 54 and became Keon Peters’ fifth wicket. During Windwards’ reply, Smith lost opening partner Miles Bascombe and Andre Fletcher quickly but shared 61 for the third wicket with Donwell Hector to revive the innings. Smith scored 55 off 135 balls, hitting five fours, but was bowled by Brown as Windwards lost five wickets for 68 runs. However, Kenroy Peters and Nelon Pascal fought back with a last-wicket stand of 46, to take Windwards within a whisker of grabbing first-innings points. Batting again, Jamaica lost Donovan Pagon for a duck to finish the day at 8 without loss.Opener Omar Phillips completed his maiden first-class double hundred as Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) ended on a strong 519 against Leeward Islands at Grove Park. Resuming on 283 for 3, Phillips added 36 for the fourth wicket with captain Floyd Reifer, who fell for 92, caught behind off Gavin Tonge. Having reached his double hundred from 375 balls, Phillips was then caught in the deep, off legspinner Anthony Martin, half an hour after lunch. His purposeful 204 off 396 balls included 23 fours and four sixes. Chadwick Walton stroked a 71-ball 50 towards the end, comprising five fours and two sixes, even as the CCC lost their last six wickets between lunch and tea for 97 runs. Martin was Leewards’ most successful bowler with 3 for 122 while Tonge and Wilden Cornwall picked up two wickets apiece. Anderson Sealy then removed Kieran Powell for 41 as Leewards took stumps at 75 for 1.Steven Jacobs hit a composed 54 to prop up bottom-placed Guyana against Trinidad & Tobago at the Queen’s Park Oval. Jacobs scored 54 as Guyana, continuing from their overnight 129 for 3, were bowled out for 282 with legspinner Imran Khan claiming 5 for 42. The overnight batsmen for the visitors, Sewnarine Chattergoon (68) and captain Travis Dowlin (42), batted cautiously under overcast conditions to extended their partnership for the fourth wicket to 69. Chattergoon fell before lunch, caught behind off Rayad Emrit having stroked six boundaries and a six in his marathon 213-ball stay. Rain forced an early lunch and Khan was into the action immediately, getting Dowlin to hole out to Atiba Allert at mid-on, and then following it up with Assad Fudadin’s wicket. Jacobs reached his half-century off 62 balls with six fours and a six, but eventually perished as Khan struck twice in his 11th over. T&T closed the day at 53 for 1, losing Imran Khan cheaply to Christopher Barnwell, for seven.

Revived Punjab face stiff challenge

The two teams that clash in the 20th match of the tournament, in Durban on Wednesday, have both emerged strong contenders

Start time 16:45 pm (14:45 GMT)Big PictureKaran Goel has struggled to get going after an impressive beginning against Delhi Daredevils•Getty ImagesTwo teams – Deccan Chargers and Delhi Daredevils – have dominated the tournament thus far, while the two that take on each other in Durban on Wednesday have both emerged strong contenders. Punjab Kings XI overcame their rain-affected defeats in their first two games to win the next two quite comfortably, marking a trend similar to their performance last season. Mumbai have been more impressive, putting behind them the blip against table-toppers Deccan, to grind Kolkata Knight Riders into submission with a 92-run win in their previous game. Both teams appear to have rectified their faults that plagued them in the early stages. The fast bowling duo of Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Abdulla recovered well after Duckworth-Lewis didn’t give them much of a chance in Punjab’s two losses, and have since shared 12 wickets between them. Abdulla’s three-wicket burst proved decisive in enabling his team to defend 139 against Rajasthan Royals in their last game, and Pathan, adding to his impressive bowling, has been consistent with the bat. In the batting line-up, Ravi Bopara and Kumar Sangakkara have proved instrumental in their team’s victories, though Karan Goel, after three disappointing outings, will look to make a more significant contribution.Things fell into place perfectly for Mumbai in their thumping win against Kolkata. Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya proved a lethal opening combination, and despite the middle-order wobble, the bowlers, led by Lasith Malinga and Dwayne Bravo, who’ve shared 15 wickets in three completed games, took little time to skittle out the opposition. The form of Shikhar Dhawan, who averages 12.33, remains a concern, but the sheer ease with which they knocked off Kolkata, and the consistency of their star players, gives them the edge going into Durban.Form guideMumbai: Sachin Tendulkar has been in prime form, with two half-centuries, and averaging 81.50. Though his opening partner, Sanath Jayasuriya, has not been as prolific, both batsmen have strike-rates of over 130. Lasith Malinga has been their highest wicket-taker with nine at a strike rate of 6.8. Zaheer Khan, on the other hand, has had an expensive IPL, bagging just one wicket and going at 7.27-an-over.Punjab: Though Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Abdulla have been among the wickets, they have also been among the more expensive of their team’s bowlers, with each conceding above 8-an-over. Piyush Chawla has been economical, going at 5.63 and taking three wickets. As for their batting, Karan Goel has two ducks to his name in his last three games, while Mahela Jayawardene has had one notable performance and averages 22.50, but will look to impose himself more.Watch out forYusuf Abdulla: Jerome Taylor’s absence was a blow for Punjab ahead of the tournament, but Yusuf Abdulla, after a shocker of a first ball where he was dispatched for six, has filled the void admirably to emerge as their highest wicket-taker with seven at an average of 13.Team newsMumbai could retain a winning combination. They were able to restrict Kolkata in the last game with a collective bowling effort, and though Dhawal Kulkarni has had only one game, where he went for 18 in one over, he may have to wait his turn. Saurabh Tiwary, the left-hand batsman, has had just the one match and Mumbai could give him a go against Punjab.Mumbai: (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Sachin Tendulkar (capt), 3 Shikhar Dhawan, 4 JP Duminy, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Saurabh Tiwary, 7 Abhishek Nayar, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Pinal Shah (wk), 11 Lasith Malinga.Punjab had included Ranadeb Bose, the medium-pacer, in their win against Bangalore, but he went for too many, conceding 24 in two overs. His replacement for the next game, Ramesh Powar, proved tidy, going for just 10 runs in two overs, and with spinners playing a major influence in this IPL, his supporting role for Piyush Chawla should come in handy.Punjab: (probable) 1 Karan Goel, 2 Ravi Bopara, 3 Yuvraj Singh (capt), 4 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 5 Mahela Jayawardene, 6 Irfan Pathan, 7 Taruwar Kohli, 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 Vikramjeet Malik, 10 Ramesh Powar, 11 Yusuf Abdulla.Head-to-head recordPunjab emerged winners in both contests between the two sides, of which one was a thriller that went to the last ball and was decided by a run-out. Punjab won the first game comfortably by a 66-run margin, with Sangakkara top scoring with 94. Tendulkar shone in the second with a supreme 65, before a collapse towards the death concluded with Yuvraj diving full stretch to clip the stumps at the non-striker’s end to beat an attempted single by offspinner Vikrant Yeligati, and snatch a one-run win.

Hughton sacked by Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties at the City Ground following the Reds’ lastest defeat.

What’s the talk?

In a short statement posted on the Nottingham Forest website, the club confirmed that they have parted company with the 62-year-old manager, with Steven Reid taking over as interim head coach.

The statement continued to reveal that the club’s search for Hughton’s successor has already begun, as well as claiming that they will provide fans with an update on any developments regarding their appointment of a new manager.

Fans will be buzzing

Having taken over from Sabri Lamouchi at the start of last season, after the Frenchman had suffered a similarly bad run of early-season form, it would be a difficult argument to make that Hughton has been a success in his role at Forest.

Indeed, while he did guide the team to safety, something that was sure to be the very minimum expectation the Forest board would have been demanding upon his appointment, the Irishman hardly blew fans away with the results achieved in the Championship last term – winning 12, drawing 16 and losing 14 of his 42 league fixtures.

And, rather than the team improving after his first summer transfer window, things have actually gotten worse for the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager this season, with Forest having picked up a single point over their opening seven games of the 2021/22 Championship campaign, with the Reds being the only second-tier side yet to have won a league fixture.

As such, the news that Hughton has left his role at the City Ground is sure to have left fans of the club buzzing, as it is abundantly clear that the Garibaldi are very much in need of a new direction.

QPR dealt Sam McCallum injury blow

Queens Park Rangers have been dealt a potential blow regarding the fitness of Sam McCallum ahead of their upcoming Championship fixture.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by West London Sport, QPR have been assessing the Norwich City loanee after he limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury in the club’s Carabao Cup penalty shootout victory over Everton on Tuesday evening.

And, while the report goes on to state that, at present, the extent of the left-back’s injury is not known, should the 21-year-old indeed have damaged his hamstring and is subsequently sidelined for a considerable amount of time, his absence would cause Mark Warburton with a major problem, as fellow left-back Lee Wallace is also currently out of action due to injury.

Warburton will be gutted

Considering how impressive McCallum has looked on the left-hand side of the QPR defence in recent weeks, as well as the aforementioned selection headache the defender’s absence would cause Warburton, the potential injury of the 21-year-old would undoubtedly leave the 59-year-old manager gutted.

Indeed, over his four Championship appearances for the Rs so far this season, the £3.15m-rated man has scored two goals, as well as taking an average of 1.5 shots and making 0.8 key passes per game.

The loanee has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 1.8 tackles, 0.5 clearances and winning 5.5 duels per match, with these returns seeing the £5k-per-week defender earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.92.

As such, McCallum’s potential absence, particularly considering Wallace’s own injury and the fact the west London side face a trip to one of the promotion favourites in West Bromwich Albion on Friday evening, is sure to come as a major blow for Warburton, who will undoubtedly be hoping his side can take the confidence of a win over Everton into the clash at The Hawthorns.

Pitcher quits cricket for cycling

Arthur Pitcher, the Bermuda batsman, has decided to quit cricket and concentrate on his cycling career after being frustrated by the lack of commitment shown by his colleagues in the team sport

Cricinfo staff25-Apr-2009Arthur Pitcher, the Bermuda batsman, has decided to quit cricket and concentrate on his cycling career after being frustrated by the lack of commitment shown by his colleagues in the team.”With cycling you’re racing for the finish line and everybody wants to get their first,” Pitcher told the . “There’s more commitment than I was finding in cricket. I still have a love for the game of cricket but the work ethic is not there. With cricket you need all 11, with cycling it is just you. You can only blame yourself for failure.”Pitcher, 27, played three ODIs for Bermuda – all against Netherlands in 2007 – in which he scored 20 runs with an average of 6.66. He did not feature in the World Cup that year. He also played a first-class game for Bermuda in the Intercontinental Cup.”As I was established in cricket, I stayed with it, but a few things took place last season and I just got fed up with it. When I first started out cycling last season I took a lot of licks. I was getting left behind on the Sunday club rides and I made a point to push and push and say to myself I’m not letting these guys get away from me any more. I had the fight to stay with the big guys and now I’m improving and winning a few races.”Bermuda’s failure to qualify for the Super Eights in the recent World Cup Qualifiers resulted in a loss of ODI status that they held for four years.

Rangers fans delighted with Hagi update

A number of Rangers supporters are delighted after the club confirmed that key man Ianis Hagi is back in training after recovering from illness.

Steven Gerrard’s men have made a stumbling start to the season, even though they still sit top of the Scottish Premiership currently.

The Gers haven’t quite managed to replicate last year’s incredible title-winning form, with Sunday’s 1-1 draw at home to Motherwell a disappointing result given the dominance they asserted last season.

One key player who Gerrard has been without since the international break is Hagi, with the Romanian absent through illness.

On Wednesday, however, Rangers’ official Twitter account posted a photo of the 22-year-back in training, suggesting he is now fit for selection again.

It is a big boost for Gerrard, given him more attacking options moving forward and hopefully an improvement in form.
